Put The Luggage Down

Mentors - Bennie Harris

"With 2011 just weeks away, isn't now a good time to put our excess luggage or baggage down?"

As we prepare for a fresh, new 365 days of "opportunity," what better way to prepare than by leaving the extra weight of 2010 or preceding years behind as we turn out the lights. Do we really want to drag this excess with us into our new, 2011 experience?

Years ago as a young Marine, my first duty station was a comfortable assignment in Rota, Spain. It was a fantastic experience for an energetic 18 year-old, living on the beach, sipping Sangria and dancing all night at the "Blue Star" disco! What more could I have asked for?

My next assignment was an Infantry unit in Okinawa, and if you know anything about the Marine Corps, you know that they do nothing the easy way. They believed in "humping" to get everywhere if we weren't onboard ship, and you carried all that you needed with you, on your back. This being a "new experience" for me, I brought all the extras that I thought I'd need to be comfortable in this experience.

It didn't take long for me to realize that you can't get "there" fast, humping with excess baggage! I rapidly learned the benefit of "traveling light" to get where I needed to go, to do that which I was tasked with doing.

Thirty-three years later, I still carry that "lesson-learned" with me, etched in my mind.

To move into a fresh, new 2011 experience will require that we willingly release that which has "served" us. In her work; "The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity", Catherine Ponder refers to this as; "The Vacuum Law of Prosperity." She notes that; "If you want greater good, greater prosperity in your life, start forming a vacuum to receive it! In other words, get rid of what you do not want to make room for what you do want." Additionally, she writes; "Inevitably, in your life experiences you will find that, when the good you wish has not appeared, it is usually because you need to release and let go of something to make room for it. New substances do not flow easily into a cluttered situation."

Now, for 99% of us, the excess baggage that we're dragging has little to do with the physical and everything to do with our conditioned mind.

The Creative Power of the Universe has given us Life and we are fully equipped with all that we need for a rich, rewarding, opulent journey. If you're a Bible fan, Galatians 5:22 notes that; "The fruit of the Spirit is; Love, Joy, Peace, Long-suffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, and Temperance." I like to think of these qualities as the benefits of "God". These, we carry within.

Always, when we enter into a new relationship or take on a new job, the first thing that comes to mind is the benefits. Very little attention is given to our roles or responsibilities, but everything to pay and benefits.

As we prepare to cross the threshold and enter the new experience of 2011, let's mindfully; (1) Leave the excess luggage and baggage at the door, (2) Create a vacuum for the good we expect and, (3) Embrace the benefits of the Creative Power within us.

The canvas of a fresh 365 days stands on the easel before us; we are the creative artisan's of our own lives with brush and paints in hand, what will your new, creative expression be?

If you're feeling stuck, you're not alone. If you'd like help with your creative expression, I'm available. If I can't help, I can point you in the right direction.
